Incorruptible
Imagine Thor going all Loki, and then imagine Loki deciding he better start acting the good guy.
That is the juicy twist we are getting from the adult graphic novel Incorruptible, story by Mark Waid and art by Jean Diaz.
Max Damage is a hardened soul – quite literally – who has been the
Bad Boy to Plutonium's Good Guy since anyone knew who they were. But when Plutonium turned terrifying and caused the death and destruction of innocent bystanders, Max
turned over a new leaf.
It’s a sudden alteration, but when Damage saw what happened – he
could not remain unchanged. Trying to convince everyone else of the leaf
turning is a different story, however. How is Max supposed to help if
no one believes him?
I came into Annihilation as a newbie, not having any prior
knowledge of the characters or the shocking turn of XXX. Because of
this, I am sure anyone more familiar will have a more invested,
horrified reaction to the villainous status of Plutonium.
For me, it was an instinctive pick for me, care of my boyfriend at
the library, and it was fun! Max has an interesting “super power.” He is
fairly straightforward, but I feel they can definitely delve deeper
into the handling of his ability and his change
of tune. They touched on it just enough to intrigue me.
There is something very scary about
Superman/Spiderman/Batman/AnySuperhero turning against us civilians.
This presents the idea that someone would HAVE to step in. Like a power
vacuum.
It was entertaining and fast paced, but a bit forgettable after the
fact. Even as I write this review, I realize very little impact
remained after finishing the final pages. In general the characters were
appealing but not all that memorable. For further
reading, I would read it if it fell across my lap – but I would not
necessarily seek it out.
If you are a super hero/villain enthusiast who is looking for a new graphic novel, however, definitely check out Incorruptible!
